        The management of pain today is greatly different than it was even a few years ago. Advancement in drugs and drug-delivery systems are making great improvements in how pain is treated.           The use of transdermal gels has been an area where much growth has taken place. In the past, the treatment of arthritis and general inflammation has been restricted to the use of oral Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatories, better known as NSAID’s. Topical preparations of NSAID’s have only recently become popular in the United States. There are many reasons for this, the biggest being that commercial manufacturers have never seen them as big “profit” making products. However, in Europe, topical preparations have been used for years.

          By using an NSAID in a gel form, you are able to apply the medication directly at the site of pain and inflammation, thus avoiding any stomach upset commonly caused by oral dosage forms. Our pharmacists are able to combine NSAID medications along with muscle relaxants to relieve muscles spasms without the common side effects of drowsiness and sedation.

          Compounding also enables us to use products for pain management that are not typically thought of when treating pain. Neuroleptics such as Amitriptyline, Gabapentin, anesthetics such as Lidocaine, Ketamine, and the popular Dextromethorphan have all been used in various combinations for the treatment of pain management.
