Hormone Replacement

Hormone Replacement Therapy (Female)

For a replacement hormone to fully replicate the function of hormones that are produced naturally in the human body, their chemical structure must match the original. Many commercially available hormone products are different from human hormones.

Phytoestrogens, sometimes called "dietary estrogens", are a diverse group of naturally occurring non-steroidal plant compounds that, because of their structural similarity with estradiol  (17ß-estradiol), have the ability to cause estrogenic or/and antiestrogenic effects. [1]

Most common phytoestrogens are found in plants. Their name comes from phyto = plant and estrogen = estrus (period of fertility for female mammals) + gen = to generate.
The similarities, at molecular level, of estrogens and phytoestrogens allow them to mildly mimic and sometimes act as antagonists to estrogen[1]. Phytoestrogens were first observed in 1926 [1][2] but it was unknown if they could have any effect in human or animal metabolism. In the 1940s it was noticed for the first time that red clover (a phytoestrogen-rich plant) pastures had effects on the fertility of grazing sheep. [1][3]  Researchers are still exploring the nutritional role of these substances in such diverse metabolic functions as the regulation of cholesterol, and the maintaining of proper bone density post-menopause. Evidence is accruing that phytoestrogens may have protective action against diverse health disorders such as prostate, breast, bowel, and other cancers, cardiovascular disease, brain function disorders, menopausal symptoms and osteoporosis[1][4][3]

At San Diego Compounding Pharmacy, we work together with physicians and patients to provide a customized regimen to fit the individual patients needs.
Beginning for the first time or transitioning to these customized compounds requires patience as adjustments to the original dosage are often required to achieve the best results.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (Male)

Numerous chemicals known as hormones regulate our bodies. Hormones are released and act upon various parts of our bodies. They can alter the way our bodies function and how we respond to various stimuli. Any imbalance of these hormones can lead to both physiological and psychological changes. These changes may drastically alter an individual’s health and quality of life.

A gradual decrease in sex hormones, especially androgen, commonly associated with aging is referred to as “male menopause” or andropause. Androgen deficiencies can impair quality of life and may lead to various health problems if left untreated. Generally, there is a decrease in free Testosterone levels in men starting around the age of 40. Over the age of 60, nearly 50% of men fall below the normal free Testosterone range.

Physical signs and symptoms of decreased androgen include anemia, decreased beard growth, changes in erection, ejaculation and or sexual dysfunction. Decreased muscle mass and an increase in fat around the abdomen and chest known as visceral obesity. Psychological symptoms may include decreased libido (sexual desire), decreased cognitive function a loss of motivation; increase lethargy and an overall low sense of well being.

We at San Diego Compounding Pharmacy work in close relationship with physicians and patients to help restore normal hormonal balance in both men and women. If you have any questions regarding the treatments of hormone replacement, or would like a physician referral, please contact us.
